A Dialogue Between Threads: Ravina Fashions Reimagines Aso-Oke for a New Generation

In a world constantly shifting between heritage and innovation, Ravina Fashions finds its rhythm in the delicate in-between. The brand’s latest release, The Aso-Oke Collection, is both a celebration a reinvention and a fashion manifesto that threads ancestral memory into the fabric of modern expression.

Rooted in the Yoruba tradition of southwestern Nigeria, Aso-Oke (“top cloth”) has long been a textile of ceremony ; woven in bold patterns and metallic threads, worn by kings, brides, and dancers. Yet for Emmanuel Ajayi, the founder and creative director of Ravina Fashions, Aso-Oke is more than nostalgia, it’s a living textile that deserves new context, new silhouettes, and new voices.

“This collection is about reclaiming cultural materials from the past, and challenging the idea that they only belong to traditional ceremonies,” Ajayi explains. “We asked: What does Aso-Oke look like on the streets of Tokyo? On a runway in Paris? In a wedding that fuses Lagos and London?”

The collection features structured yet fluid garments, ranging from sharply tailored jackets and high-waisted trousers to pleated maxi skirts and sculptural coats. Metallic threads glint against earthy tones of rust, indigo, and cream, while the familiar geometric motifs of traditional Aso-Oke are reworked into asymmetrical paneling and modern pattern clashes. Every look walks the line between power and intimacy, echoing the quiet authority of the ancestors and the bold curiosity of now.

Creative direction for the campaign draws on Yoruba cosmology, with styling inspired by Orisha archetypes , gods and spirits of nature, femininity, war, and wisdom. “We wanted the images to feel like modern folklore,” says Emmanuel. “There’s movement, elegance, but also quiet rebellion. These are not just garments, they are symbols of continuity and resistance.”

Photography leans into contrast: models in Aso-Oke jackets sit in abandoned industrial buildings, or walk barefoot through marble-floored galleries. The message is clear: heritage doesn’t belong behind glass — it walks, dances, and breathes among us.

While luxury fashion often co-opts cultural symbols without context, Ravina Fashions takes the opposite approach , reintroducing tradition through the designer’s own lived experience as both Nigerian and British. The Aso-Oke Collection is deeply personal, yet universally resonant. It speaks to diasporic identity, sustainability (with select pieces using vintage or surplus fabrics), and the power of textiles to carry memory across oceans and generations.

At its core, the collection asks:

Can we wear the past without being worn down by it?
Ravina Fashions answers with an emphatic yes — in every stitch, every silhouette, and every story woven into the cloth.
